Macbeth Quotes

"I am in blood
Stepped in so far that, should I wade no more
Returning were as tedious as go over" 

This is Macbeth speaking with lady Macbeth, and he is basically saying that he has done so much harm that it would be just as hard to try and fix them as it would be to keep killing. This foreshadows that more killing is to come, and also that something untoward may happen to Macbeth.

"Fair is foul and foul is fair"

This is the chant that the three witches sing while they make their potions, and it seems to be a central theme of the play. Macbeth blurs the lines of foul and fair many a time, and it shows us that Macbeth is willing to do anything for power.

  1. Hey Eli. I agree with your interpretations of both of these quotes. It is interesting that mention that Shakespeare is foreshadowing that more killing is coming; I did not think of that.

  2. Hey Eli, these are both really good quotes and I also agree with your interpretations. He really has done so much harm and he keeps getting trapped deeper. Also, the fair is foul quote is very famous and its interesting that the witches are so important to the story and they were the one to say this.
